The Pre-Conquest Church

The churchyard used for burials, often from early times distinguished by a yew tree, may be even older than the church that now stands in it. Early evidence of Christianity is also provided by the remains of carved stone crosses, mostly dating from the 8th century onwards. The first churches were very simple timber buildings, as excavations have shown.
