The timeline is an interactive guide to the major periods and styles of British architecture set within their time periods.

Using the scrollbar below the timeline, or by clicking anywhere on it, you can move backwards and forwards through time to get an overall perspective on the different periods and styles and how they related to one another.

Each term which appears on the Timeline is glossed.  hold your mouse over a bar to see a brief definition, or click a bar for a fuller explanation and illustrated examples.
