Manchester's Banks

Manchester, Midland Bank, King Street

Manchester's importance as a financial centre is illustrated by the range of banks in the city centre dating from the early 19th century through to the late 20th century. The examples described can all be found within a few minutes' walk of King Street and Spring Gardens in the city's financial quarter in streets which were residential in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As well as buildings by Charles Cockerell and Edwin Lutyens there are examples by some of the most talented Manchester-based architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Edward Walters, J.E. Gregan and Charles Heathcote.
