Lantern cross
Churchyard cross with lantern-shaped top.
Lattice girder
A girder with braced framework.
Lavatorium
In an abbey or monastery, a washing place adjacent to the refectory or dining hall.
Lean-to
A single sloping roof built against a vertical wall; also applied to the part of the building beneath.
Ledger slab
A monolithic slab laid flat over a grave or tomb.
Lesene
(lit. a mean thing): A pilaster without base or capital. Also called a pilaster strip.
Liernes
Short decorative ribs in the upper part of a vault, not linked to any springing point; hence lierne vault.
Light
Compartment of a window defined by the uprights or mullions.
Limewashing
Wall covering of a thin layer of lime plaster.
Linenfold
Tudor panelling carved with simulations of folded linen.
